Hydration is so crucial, which is why I’ve been paying more and more attention to it as I get older. When I was younger, I didn’t think twice about adequate hydration and I definitely did not have a daily water intake goal. What I’ve learned over the years is that hydration isn’t just about consuming water, but incorporating as many water-rich foods as possible, daily. One of those water-dense foods I love to integrate is grapefruit.

Ingredient Highlight: Grapefruit

Contains about 88% water - half of a grapefruit contains around ½ cup of water.

Rich in fiber

A good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium (half of a grapefruit meets 5% of your daily recommended needs), and folate.

Adequate levels of potassium have been shown to reduce high blood pressure. Also, potassium lowers the risk of heart disease.

Grapefruits are a good source of prebiotics. Prebiotics are specialized plant fibers. They are what help feed the good bacteria in one’s stomach. Think of prebiotics as a good fertilizer that helps stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria.

I love storing my grapefruit in the fridge for maximum chillness if I’m eating it plain. Regarding the recipe below, I recently broiled citrus, and it was an experience. I found it to be so comforting in the coldest of months. If you don’t have grapefruit or don’t like it, you can try this with an orange. Ingredients

One whole grapefruit, sliced into quarters

Honey

Method

Line a baking sheet with foil and set aside and preheat your broiler.

Take your quartered grapefruit and slather it in honey on the two exposed sides with a butter knife or spoon.

Broil for 10-15 minutes. Please keep an eye on it, as heating times vary due to oven temperatures being different. Take the sheet out once the honey is browned and bubbly. I like to keep mine in until they are slightly charred.

Enjoy and eat immediately.

Notes

Please consult with your physician if you are taking prescription drugs as there can be reactions with certain foods, including grapefruit.
